Though, the comments at the bottom are also partially true as well. You don’t have to go to your dream school to get a higher education and taking a loan out for more than your degree is going to make you is a bit crazy, but I understand it since I’ve seen people live through this.

But the article is right about how student loan debt is a broken system. Corporations like Sallie Mae and banks are feeding into your desperation for experiencing college life and getting a higher education. I have student loans so I understand how quick the bank is to call you if you’ve missed ONE payment. I’m probably average (or above average) on how much student loan debt I have. And even though I’m still in school I’ve started paying it back monthly (as much as I can afford). And even if I wanted to pay more than the minimum payment I can’t, atleast that’s how it is with my bank, which I find ridiculous — it’s almost like they really do want this foot hold on you for the rest of your life. Corporations like Sallie Mae really are bloodsuckers out for the bottom line.

The interest rates on student loans are ridiculously high as well — more than your mortgage, can be more than a car loan, etc… it’s crazy how they think this is a feasible system for people who don’t have jobs yet. Tuition is just as bad, the article states a good fact that it’s gone up 1120% since the 70s, with the median cost of living not going up nearly that much.

The comments say something about choosing a degree that would actually make money but usually those degrees require even more education and more debt to get into. Or to go into engineering/technology but some people just aren’t good at math or science, so you want them to get into debt only to flunk out because they couldn’t handle it? Luckily, I got into that field and it isn’t because I wanted to make money but because I actually love the field and what I do. But for people who don’t have that same skillset it’s not fair to tell them to go into a field they aren’t happy with.

I work full-time and go to school at the same time. Granted, I go to school part-time because that’s about as much as I can handle with my full-time job, but that’s just how I decided to handle this part of my life. And even tho I did it this way, I’m still in over 50K worth of student loan debt. Also, before you tell me that I’m probably just working as a barista or as a server, actually no, I work full-time as a software developer for a big corporation AND go to school at the same time. I make good money and try to pay these student loans off and it just leaves me feeling like I’m living paycheck to paycheck.

Being a millennial is hard, and I wish the world would just cut us some slack (as the article says at the bottom). I know some people are making us look worst than what most of really are but most of us really are hard working, broke, trying to make the best of our lives, sort of people. It’s not easy being us during this time in life — but this is a post for another day.

[33,26
28,27
post-62","post","type-post","status-publish","format-link","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-life","category-money","tag-debt","tag-student-loans","post_format-post-format-link
